What is EGCG?



Epigallocatechin gallate, commonly known as EGCG, is one of the main active components of Green Tea. EGCG is a catechin a sub class of compounds called polyphenols. EGCG, like many polyphenols, is a powerful anti-oxidant.



What are the fat loss benefits of EGCG?



EGCG alone and when combined with caffeine significantly increases metabolic rate[1]. Mechanism of this is likely three fold.



1. EGCG increases Cyclic amp levels[2] [3]. Increased cyclic amp means greater energy substrates available. Basically increasing energy and endurance. Studies have found that extended use of EGCG increases indurance as well as fatty acid oxidation[4].

2. EGCG inhibits breakdown of catecholamines, particularly NE( which is lipolytic) by inhibiting COMT[5] [6]. Increased levels of catecholamines means increased fatloss, increased energy levels and lowered appetite.

3. EGCG decreases food intake and suppresses appetite[7], likely due to leptin pathway activity[8] and the increases in catecholamines. How does EGCG fight cancer?

There is extensive evidence that EGCG is an effect chemopreventive compound. Most of the population studies have been done in Asia where green tea is widely and heavily consumed. Most of these studies indicate increased life span and less frequent occurrence of cancer, particularly prostate[9], ovarian[10] and breast[11] cancers. Studies using EGCG have shown direct impact on these cancer cell lines. EGCG exerts its activity by inhibiting mitogen-activated protein kinases, cyclin-dependent kinases, growth factor-related cell signaling, Cox-2 inhibition, activation of activator protein 1 (AP-1) and nuclear factor kappaB (NFkappaB)[12]. With respect to prostate cancer the presence of copper is essential for its greatest activity[13], this would indicate the need for supplementation with both copper and EGCG.

How does EGCG help with diabetes?


EGCG has represses hepatic glucose production and has insulin mimetic glucose clearance effects that make it a potential treatment for Type II diabetes and metabolic syndrome[14]. This means that EGCG actually acts like insulin, though it does not have the adipogenic (fat storing) effects of insulin, as well as improving insulin sensitivity. EGCG, at least in animals has been shown to protect the pancreatic islets, which means that it may protect against type 1 diabetes or at least slow the progression of this autoimmune disease[15].
